Description

Mother of Pearl Pink is a medium to large size Anemone form flower that opens in shades of mauve pink and pale peach shades. The petals are mauve, in center the staminodes show in pale peachy shades, while the petalodes are mauve pink. The base of the segments is narrow and yellow color. These yellow pigments bleed outward, imparting a glow to the flower. Up close the pigments are quite iridescent especially on younger flowers. Initially, the color is intense but will fade over time in full sun. The mature flower shows in mauve with a silvery cast. In center, well hidden by the segments, the gynoecium consists of four pale green, piliferous carpels and rose red, elongated, stigmas. The androecium is fully transformed and absent. The broad petals are rounded; the margins are quite smooth. The inner segments long and narrow, the dorsal end notched. The scent of the flower is slight, typically it is not noticeable.

A substantial bush with a good plant habit, it is vigorous, fast to increase and produces a lush, verdant, medium height plant within 4 years of planting. The clump is large when fully grown. It is a dependable bloomer, covering the plant with an above average amount of color. Each flowering stem has a large main bloom and 1 to 3 side buds that open over time and extend the bloom season. The flower buds are round and about 3/4-inches in diameter. The blooms sit well above the canopy of the deep forest green foliage. The medium size leaflets are of lanceolate shape, exhibiting marked substance and semi-glossy finish. The bush is well clothed in foliage from top to bottom. Here in Missouri the foliage remains quite clean and healthy throughout the growing season and seems to exhibit a moderate degree of resistance toward fungal disease such as black spot and mildew. Black spot can become a problem in very hot and humid summers, while mildew and botrytis have not been observed.

The long stems are mostly self-supporting, but arch when exposed to inclement weather. Light support may help keep the bush together. This cultivar provides attractive ornamental qualities, especially when in flower, the color is amazing. It is an eye catcher that is visible from a distance but reveals intricate beauty up close. An outstanding variety for the flower garden, the sunny border, the stems are long enough for cutting, this variety makes fine stems for the vase. It is a pleasing addition to the Anemone flower form assortment; a group of peonies frequently overlooked and has few improved additions over the years.
