Description
Sugar Plum Fairy is a single flower form, Itoh hybrid peony. The flower opens in a unique color combination of red-purple hue overlaying a light buff ground color. Individual buds open over a period of several days, displaying a range of the colors at once. There is one flower per stem, double row of petals, somewhat wispy stamens having pale filaments of the same hue as the petals, with green carpels, stigma and sheath ivory white.
The vigorous plant is semi-dwarf and comparatively broad, forming a low mound of rounded silhouette. The plant and leaflets hold appearance well through the growing season. No fertility observed. Pollen is absent, seeds have not been seen. Sugar Plum Fairy is a great choice for the near flower border and an up font spot in the mixed perennial border.
Best Use
General garden and landscape use; perennial border; mass plantings; deer resistant.
Basic Growing Requirements
Full Sun. Water as needed, sensitive to overwatering and waterlogged conditions. Soil pH 6.5-7. Fertile, well-draining soil.
