The North American Peony Catalog 2025

Welcome to Hollingsworth Peonies®

Program Update – April 14th, 2025

Hollingsworth Peonies is proud to offer our Missouri Grown peonies to our retail and wholesale customers. We cultivate our peonies in accordance with the Integrated Pest Management protocol (IPM) and the supervision of the Missouri Department of Agriculture and the USDA right here in the United States. Because our products are never imported, they are not only healthy and completely adopt to North American growing conditions, but they are also not subject to tariffs when shipped nationwide. We are licensed to ship to all states except Hawaii.

Our peonies are grown right here in our own fields, completely independent of international supply chains, embargoes or outside markets. That means they will not be affected by tariffs or global disruptions. What we have growing in the fields will be ready for you this fall — so when you place an order with us, you can do so with confidence, knowing you’ll receive exactly what you asked for, at the price we agreed on, and at the optimal time when peonies should be planted.

Our catalog published in January, and we are incredibly pleased to be able to maintain the same prices for the remainder of this year. These prices are carefully determined based on factors such as labor costs, taxes, insurance, and the wages and benefits we provide to our workers. A dozen families depend on the income generated at our farm. Our revenue stays here in northwest Missouri, supporting our local communities.

With tariffs and supply chain disruptions continuing to impact growers and changes occurring daily, we believe it is more important than ever to make locally grown peonies accessible — especially to our fellow American specialty crop growers. That is why we are considering harvesting additional fields this fall, to help meet the demand for healthy, reliable peony roots at a fair price and to support others in planning for a strong season ahead.

If you are an American specialty crop farmer, cut flower grower, independent nursery, or landscaper interested in peonies, please visit our Wholesale Landing Page to learn how to become a wholesale client. For orders that exceed our current availability, please email us with what you may need for a more tailored focus on what we can harvest in addition to the current harvest schedule.

Depending on demand, we are happy to harvest beyond our initial plan. Please reach out early, as incorporating additional fields into our program requires more resources and in particular labor. We must arrange it in advance.

Also with the new year some important improvements are being made to how we ship. We’re saying goodbye to USPS Flat Rate boxes and introducing technology that calculates shipping charges in real time. We’re keeping payment options simple and flexible by still accepting check or money order. (Please note for those using cards or other electronic payments, a small transaction fee will apply which is simply the processing fee from the payment processor.)

Along with changes to our catalog and shopping cart, we’re also announcing our new website is up and running! However, we’re still in the process of moving all the content from our previous platform to the new one. Throughout the year, we will be transferring information and adding exciting new features, but for now we’ve added our full assortment of peonies with updated images and we’ve made it easier than ever to shop from the catalog by adding links for seamless navigation. Our goal is to have all variety descriptions updated as quickly as possible! Once the transfer is complete, we’ll connect the new site to hollingsworthpeonies.com. Your patience and understanding is greatly appreciated by our staff. We can’t wait to share the full experience with you!

We’re so grateful to have you along on the journey of our Hollingsworth hybridizing and field production program, where we grow some of the world’s best, award-winning peony cultivars. We love sharing our progress with you, and we hope you’ll check out regular updates in the green information box on our homepage. Your support means the world to us, and we’re excited to hear about your experiences as we head into another year on the farm and look forward to the new growing season!

Rouge Harlequin

This new single flower form peony stands apart. In contrast to the existing assortment, this new variety is unique in both flower color and plant habit. The flower opens white with brilliant shades of purply pink to fuchsia markings on the outside and the inside of the petals. The color soon changes to shades of lace and pink pearl to lavender markings before the petals drop. The plant boasts an exceptional plant habit, the stems are of a burnished bonze color which the stems retain throughout the growing season. Abundant foliage covers the pant well. The leaves are quite large and of an unusual dark, blue green color. After the petals drop the dark stems, foliage and the shiny dark purple of the fool’s hat shaped seed pods provide an after-season appeal to the sunny border. The dried stems with seed pods make interesting components to flower arrangements. For more information and images of this peony visit the peony catalog.

Peonies From Our Farm
Delivered Directly to You

We are a proud, registered peony grower and hybridizer based in the heart of the Midwest. Our farm in northwest Missouri is home to a large variety of herbaceous peonies, including Lactiflora (bush peonies), hybrid peonies, Itoh hybrids (intersectional hybrids), and even species selections like Fernleaf and other Paeonia species. We offer a diverse assortment of cultivars for every peony lover!

Our incredibly hardy herbaceous peonies thrive in the tough Midwest climate with its hot, humid summers and freezing, cold winters. Grown in open fields, they’re harvested from late summer to early fall, perfectly acclimated to North American growing conditions.

For the best results, bare root peonies should be planted in the fall when they are dormant. That’s why we only ship freshly dug, high quality bare roots in the fall, ready for immediate planting. All of our peonies are 3 to 5 years old and have flower bud initials at harvest. This means many of them may even bloom the first year after planting. We’re excited to share our beautiful peonies with you, and we’re confident they’ll thrive in your garden!

PLEASE BE AWARE ORDERS ARE ONLY SHIPPED FROM SEPTEMBER TO NOVEMBER. WE DO NOT SHIP PEONIES ANY OTHER TIME OF THE YEAR.

Hybridizing & Growing Perfect Peonies

Explore Our Peonies By Best Use

Peonies are known to most gardeners for their spectacular flowers and luxuriant foliage, especially throughout spring, as the colorful shoots rapidly unfold and go through their almost sensuous expansion to the fullness of flowering. In these respects any peonies are predominant players in the rising crescendo of the early garden.

When it comes to selecting among the peonies for particular uses, the task becomes more complex, for there is a rich diversity of choices available. In order to take all of this diversity into account, it is helpful to see them as they grow. But, this is not always possible. Accordingly, in preparing our descriptions we give priority to information felt to be useful in choosing cultivars to be placed in the more viewed areas, where grooming work is a priority. In addition we have divided our peony varieties into four groups based on their utility and best use.
