Exploring & Choosing Peonies
By Bloom Time
Peonies put on a dazzling display just once a year, but what a show it is! In northwest Missouri, their annual bloom awakens in gardens late April through early June. But across the country, the timing of this floral delight tends to vary — peonies may bloom earlier in some regions or arrive fashionably late in others.
Their blooming schedule is influenced by both geography and genetics. Each variety follows its own internal clock, with some cultivars unfurling their petals weeks ahead of others, even in the same garden.
The season begins in earnest with the “very early” bloomers in the warmer climates, otherwise known as USDA Zone 7. Think northern Texas, Oklahoma, and Tennessee, where the floral fanfare can begin as early as March.
The season progresses northward, reaching a crescendo through spring and summer before drawing to a close in the cooler climates of USDA Zone 2. In parts of Alaska, the last domestically grown peonies bow out by late August to early September.

Bloom Period
Here in northwest Missouri, the peony bloom season unfolds like a slow elegant symphony from late April to early June, spanning roughly seven stunning weeks filled with incredible and kaleidoscopic imagery.
This floral procession is divided into seven distinct bloom periods: Very Early, Early, Early Midseason, Midseason, Late Midseason, Late and Very Late.
The countdown begins with the opening of the very first blossom, marking the start of the season. From there, each stage follows in a visual arpeggio of colors as different varieties perform their colorful dance in the wind — each timed by a perfect blend of genetics and environment.
The result is a continuous, rolling display of color and fragrance that captures the essence life at its most beautiful.
Bloom Week
At the heart of peony season lies Bloom Week, calculated from the very center of the bloom period, Week 4.
To find that anchor point, it’s the iconic variety ‘Red Charm’ by which all others are judged. Each cultivar is assessed by how much earlier or later it blooms compared to it.
The resulting scale is virtually identical and mirroring that of the Bloom Period model. The earliest week is 1, while peonies of week 7 are the last to flower.
Bloom week notations with more than one number indicate an extended bloom time. These varieties don’t just make a brief appearance; they stretch their performance across several bloom weeks, offering garden and flower enthusiasts a longer-lasting splash of color and charm.
