Zone 3 – Appropriate climate for growing
             herbaceous peonies.

Zone 4 – Appropriate climate for growing
             herbaceous peonies.

Zone 5 – Appropriate climate for growing
             herbaceous peonies.

Zone 6 – Appropriate climate for growing
             herbaceous peonies.

Zone 7 – Good for many varieties.

Zone 8 – Marginal, possibly some Lactiflora
             group and Itoh hybrid peonies.

Zone 9 – Peonies are not expected to grow
             in zone 9 or higher.

Herbaceous peonies grow in cold and cool temperate climates, areas with enough winter chill to induce dormancy and flower bud formation. If the climate is “too warm” which means the winter is not long enough, the plants may not flower or they perish. In general, peonies do well in coastal and certain interior regions of Alaska, many areas in Canada, and the northern two thirds of the continental U.S.
