Best Landscaper® 'Shawnee Chief'
Originator: (Bigger, 1940)
Group: Lactiflora
Bloom period: Late
Bloom week: 6
Flower form: Double
Height: Medium
USDA Zone: 2 to 8
Item number: 1356

Details:

Full double; large size, flower opens ruby red, the color variable with the prevailing seasonal changes. The color is clean throughout and expressed more brilliantly in colder climate or cool spring. The color fades in the sun, petals frosted and the flower is cast in a silvery sheen. Broad, rounded outer petals, grade smaller inward; flower well-furnished with segments, makes a high silhouette, globular shape. Wavy and slightly edged at the margins, the segments are of good substance, nicely arranged, making it a nicely tailored flower of pleasing form. Very satisfying plant habit, vigorous and good increase, a dependable bloomer with abundant color on a substantial, medium height bush. Stiff, long stems may sag with rain in the opened flower, the presentation benefited by support against rough weather. The bush is well clothed, top to bottom, in quality deep green foliage, which retains its good appearance for most of the growing season. A well-proportioned, handsome peony, perfectly suited for display in a perennial border or a cut flower garden. Furnishes fine stems for the vase and is a good commercial cutter with good cold storage qualities.

The late Myron Bigger highly recommended this one for cemetery planting and said he had sold more plants of it than of any other peony because it was found well constituted for establishment in cemetery plantings.
