'Duchesse de Nemours'
Originator: (Klehm, 1999)
Group: Herbaceous Hybrid
Bloom period: Very Early
Bloom week: 1
Flower form: Single
USDA Zone: 3 to 7
Item number: 5209
The small single flower opens deep rose red. Two rows of guard petals surround a cluster of yellow stamens and a set of pale green carpels with rose-red stigmas. The flower size is in good proportion to the semi-dwarf plant. The infertile flower is without fragrance, neither seed nor pollen have been found. The compact bush exhibits a very satisfying plant habit. It is vigorous but slow to increase. It will grow a nice mound after a few years. This variety is a dependable bloomer with ample color. One flower per stem, no side buds, are borne close to the dense foliage. The bush holds its shape well against inclement weather events but tends to go dormant quite early in the dry and hot summer here in NW Missouri. It is a charming little peony that graces the near border or rock garden with an early dash of color.
