Best Landscaper® 'Legion of Honor'
Originator: (Saunders, 1941)
Group: Herbaceous Hybrid
Bloom period: Early Midseason
Bloom week: 3
Flower form: Single
Height: Medium
USDA zone: 3 to 7
Item number: 0132

Details:

The single flower opens flag-red with a bright yellow center. Two rows of broad petals surround a cluster of stamens. Long, light yellow filaments bare these stamens in a ring around the carpels. The fully exposed carpels are pale green and tipped with rose red stigmas. The medium size flower is of formal shape, and good substance. The bush exhibits a satisfying plant habit. It is vigorous, the increase is below average but will grow a good size clump after a few years of planting. It is a dependable bloomer, covering the medium height bush with an ample amount of color. Young shoots in the spring are of a remarkable chartreuse, burnished in a red bronze shade. This color lasts for some time, expanding foliage is slow to take on the mature, medium green of the fully developed foliage. A long and wiry stem bares one flower well above the foliage but close enough for a pleasing presentation. These erect, self-supporting stems are well covered in foliage, the leaflets are oblong and quite narrow and remain attractive for most of the growing season. The bush holds its shape well against inclement weather and staking is not required under normal growing conditions. This unusual peony is an excellent choice for the perennial border.
