Group: [Herbaceous Hybrid]
Bloom period: Very Early
Bloom week: 1
Flower form: Single
Height: Semi-dwarf
Distinction: Novelty, Rare
Item number: 0803

Details:

Single; medium, petals are pale yellow, overlapping, rounded and of good substance. Large, prominent center ring of golden yellow stamens surrounds pale green carpels. Fragrant. Well grown plants are of near medium height, more often semi-dwarf, sometimes sparse bush. Rarely offered in recent times, this peony is valued for its earliness of flowering while being generally resistant to flower bud injury from late spring cold events.

Herbaceous hybrid. Parentage: 'Mons. Jules Elie' x P. mlokosewitschii, has useable fertility.

It is of special interest for its genetic ancestry and its potential as a parent of wanted characteristics. Paeonia mlokosewitschii is the yellow flowered peony of the Caucasus and nearby mountain ranges of the Middle East.  Bred back to another P. lactiflora, double flower seed parent 'Claire de Lune' is parent of at least one peony cultivar presently in commerce. 'Summer Glow'.  Like many first-generation interspecies hybrids, the percent fertility is not high, but the potential for wanted progeny appears to be excellent.

Backcross to lactiflora, or pollinate with tetraploid.
